Red heather & arbutus honey
After a tiring but productive summer (if of course the weather conditions have "conspired") and in the middle of September, our apiary returns to the area, from where it started, of Movri.
There we will offer them our care, with the necessary work and preventive treatments (with natural and biological means, which are reflected in the analyzes of our honeys), so that they can successfully cope with the difficulties of winter. Our bees there will enjoy the flowering of sorrel (red heather), which is rich in pollen and nectar. They will renew their populations and become much stronger. Later in November, the flowering of the arborvitae will be added. If these two flowers produce intense nectar secretion then we will have the possibility of another harvest by harvesting red heather & arbutus honey.
This honey has a brown (dark copper) color with grayish shades. Its aroma is moderate to strong. It crystallizes very quickly acquiring a buttery texture. It has a bitter, very special taste that makes it stand out from all the other honeys. The presence of even a small amount of arbutus in the heather is strongly felt.
Its bitter taste is attributed to the glycoside arbutin which cleanses the
blood and regulates the level of cholesterol in it. It is worth noting that
in its composition we find the polysaccharide, Tyranose, which has been
shown experimentally to increase cell life and the enzyme Dimension or
Amylase, which breaks down starch.
It is very rich in trace elements and vitamins and is one of the best
options for toning the body.
The natural antibiotics (which it contains to a large extent) have the
effect of making it a shield of protection for the body from various
diseases.
It is also used as a diuretic, and antiseptic of the urinary system as well
as in cases of mild bronchial infections.
The calories contained in arbutus honey are less than other honeys due to the low percentage of glucose and fructose and so it is recommended in cases of diet as well as for type 2 diabetics.
